Bongo Van Dort

You seem to have most of the d.js in and around Manchester in the sixties, there is one missing.

We used to go to the Twisted Wheel in Brazannose Street fom 1963-1965, the d.j.was Bongo Van Dort.

He introduced my generation to great new music, Coasters, Chuck Berry, Marauders and new American sounds.  He was a realy nice bloke and very approachable. Love you site keep up the great work, for old fogies like me.

Hi Peter Byrne.  Glad you remember Pete van Dort, born Pete Lyne, but hated his father so took his Grandfather's name instead. He was one of my best friends from William Hulme's Grammar School until his untimely death in a collision with a lorry.

Thanks for replying Pete,
I'm just looking at a photograph on my office wall, showing Pete and I in grey top hats and tails.  I was best man at his wedding.  Happy memories!

I remember Pete Van Dort from the old Wheel, great D.J. Heard Motown for the first time when he played 'Shop Around' by the Miracles and Please Mr. Postman by the Marvelettes... also songs by the Coasters, LaVerne Baker, Jimmy Smith and Ramsey Lewis --The Marauders were the house band on a Tuesday night ...  fantastic memories

Pete was my step brother. Marion, his mother, remarried in 1952. I came into this world in 1953. There are many great memories of Pete, including the time when Stephen (my brother) and I went to Manchester and met Pete's mentors, the Abardi brothers. Many great memories.
