Bunny Lewis

Agents that worked different parts of the country but one that’s not mentioned is  Bunny Lewis who was a female impersonator.  He  ran his office from his house which was in Whalley Range at the beginning of Princess Parkway.

Running the office was a Johnny Martin who may be the one who was in The Cresters but at the time was solo with a comedy act involving a suitcase full of hats and impersonating people.  Tthe most memorable being Old Mother Riley.

Bunny Lewis’s colleague lived with him and I do know he made all his dresses and he was a well known Manchester comedian called Jackie Carlton.

One thing that sticks in my mind was the fact that Bunny had two little pet monkeys running riot in the place.  Bunny roped me in to march to the town hall with hundreds of other acts to complain about a new gambling law that would have affected the entertainment business. There was an agent called Mr Bean (I kid you not) - I think his name was Tony.

I  do remember two of his children had an act  - I think called The Millionaires.

Bunny was appearing at the Alhambra Morecambe the week we had the fire that destroyed the theatre in 1970, at the time of the fire , Bunny was judging the Miss Great Britain Bathing Beauty Concert at the Swimming Pool. Fortunately non of his dresses were damaged as the fire didn't reach the stage area.

My late father was in charge of the entertainment at the Joe Grimmond club in Cheadle he invited Bunny on several occasions and  he was a great success. My late husband worked with Frankie Lamar at Allied dairies in Northenden in the late 1950's he  later became known as Fu Fu Lamar

I worked in Manchester in 1970,and was getting married that year. Someone I worked with knew Bunny Lewis and for my hen night at The Rembrant Pub on Canal Street, Bunny arrived and got me up on stage as part of his act. It was amazing and we all had such a laugh. I’ll never forget it.

We use to have a greengrocers at the top of Princess Road and remember Bunny Lewis popping in to buy his fruit and veg on the way home after a night working in Manchester.  My Mum use to serve him and absolutely adored him and can remember him standing at the counter still wearing full stage make up from his act the night before. Quite a sight first thing of a Saturday morning but then ‘The Moss’ as we affectionately called Moss Side was a melting pot of different nationalities and people that were often ‘different’ to the accepted norm in the ‘70’s. Good times when we didn’t feel the need to ‘label’ individuals that had chosen a different lifestyle.

I remember Bunny quite well. he was a friend of my husband,  Bunny and Mike use to come over to Malta and Bunny worked for a few weeks .One of the times we met them and Shiela Buxton was over  working and we all got together  it was quite a night, another time Bunny came over with Jackie Carlton on holiday they were self catering and Bunny was doing the cooking and he mistakenly used garlic instead of onions, We went to see Bunny at a few places around Manchester and always enjoyed his shows!.

My Memories of Bunny are from the annual North West Equity Office trip to Blackpool.  WOW the banter on the bus all the way, with acts like Bunny (always with Mike), Jackie Carlton, Vonnie & Gerry, Paul Hedges and a guy who played the postman on Coronation Street (sorry forgot his name) amongst lots of others.  After a short fish and chips lunch we would tumble into Nellie Deans Music Bar, where they would all show off before a short trip around the lights and finally down the pier to see a show, Mick Miller, who they all knew.

Bunny was on form and entertaining all the way back to Manchester, how he had the strength - I will never know.
