Houldsworth Hall (aka Church House), was located at 90 Deansgate, and was the administrative centre for the Diocese of Manchester. The building was opened by the Archbishop of York in 1911. Besides concerts the venue also hosted wrestling matches. I went to two of the gigs in 1969 – the ones headlined by the Edgar Broughton Band and also the one with the Third Ear Band (who I always found ‘hard work’).
Edgar Broughton had a loyal following in Manchester and their ‘Out Demon’s Out’ and their version of Captain Beeheart’s ‘Drop Out Boogie’ called ‘Apache Drop Out’ (using the Shadow’s hit ‘Apache’) got the crowd going. Anyone else go to the 1969 series of gig or the later ones? I don't know how I missed the Country Joe & The Fish on 22nd March 1969!

I went to the first two mentioned and. I'm sure a few more but can't see them listed. Stackwaddy was definitely one of the bands, but not with the line-up here. It was the 60s though.

I seem to remember seeing Greasy Bear more than once and Grass Eye being involved

I was at the Edgar Broughton Band gig with Gary Rashman, brother of Elliot, future manager of Simply Red, but would have sworn it was also Third Ear Band, not Principal Edwards...but it was a great gig with real 1960s light show!

My grandad put the wrestling shows on. I have just walked past and asked to have a look but the hall is not as it was. The guy on the reception was amazed when he googled it!

Reg Park, three time winner of the Mr. Universe title, appeared at Houldsworth Hall in 1969. Bert Loveday of Bolton photographed Reg's performance and Robert Kennedy reported on it in the Weider publications. At 39 years of age, Reg was still the planet's alpha male.

I also attended two concerts at the Houldsworth Hall in 1969. The first one had Family,  Roy Harper and Bridget St. John.  The second was Country Joe and the Fish and The Liverpool Scene , who I saw later in the evening at The Magic Village,  Principal Edward's didn't show as usual. Keith,  Bolton.

Anybody know how to contact Gary Rashman? We were at school together and lost contact 50 years ago. I heard a Wishbone Ash track a couple of days ago and it reminded me of him. It would be good to say hello.
