SOUL STAX

A Moss Side based four/five piece soul group. Locally probably not as popular as other similar bands (eg Exits) but were a fine band nevertheless.

Introduced a more reggae feel - which was probably a bit ahead of its time. I can recall them playing "Last Train to Skaville" at the Pop Inn, Rusholme.

I knew the group quite well, specifically the guitarist Derrick Cox. They became the Freedom Train in 1970 and played the Coop New Century Hall. Sadly the lead singer, Mannie Simmonds, died in a car accident in February 1970 and the other members split up with Derrick moving to London and playing with Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon into 1971. Does anyone have any further information about him or other original band members?
